Does using polyurethane insulation help appliances save energy?

Yes. Polyurethane insulation offers extremely high insulation properties. In fact, in an Eco-Efficiency Analysis showed that If all the storage facilities, freezer chests and transport vehicles were insulated with polyurethane rigid foam at 60 millimeters thickness, they would save 16 times more energy than the energy used to produce the insulation—in the first seven days that the appliances are in service. After a year, the optimal thickness polyurethane insulation will save 1040 times more energy than the amount used to produce it.

How does using polyurethane foam impact the manufacturing process?

The combination of a fine, closed cell structure and its special designed chemistry give Elastocool® the outstanding mechanical and physical properties required when the energy efficiency requirements of thermal insulation applications are extremely demanding. Elastocool® technology has been developed to enhance its processability, flow characteristics, and gel and demoulding time. The K-factor and density distribution are also improved, as well as the mechanical properties of the final product.

What blowing agents are used in BASF appliance insulations?

By March 1, 2008, provisions of the Clean Air Act mandate the elimination of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) as blowing agents for most rigid polyurethane foam applications. Always ahead of the curve and conscious of its environmental responsibilities, BASF developed HFC and Hydrocarbon technology during the '90s to create more environmentally friendly formulations. We also understood the important legacy of this technology and continued to improve the performance and scope of blowing agent choices.
